Taylor Mill Swim Club
After more than two decades I am back at the Taylor Mill Swim Club, this time as a member in my own right. Why TSMC? After much deliberation, and a somewhat bitter resolve, we decided to leave Silverlake Family Center last year and put in for a bond at TSMC. Our original motivation was to pursue swim team opportunities for both boys since SL no longer supports a recreational swim team. Some other immediate benefits over SL is that TSMC is very close to our home, whereas SL required getting on the expressway. TSMC also lets me swim laps in the evening given their more generous closing time of 9:00 PM. Finally TSMC still has that old informal feel that SL lost, including the ability to bring in your own alcohol (not that I drink anymore but I was a little bitter when SL ended that practice).
What is remarkable is how competitive it became to get a bond here. There are not many public pools in either central or southern Kenton County. There was a YMCA on Decoursey Avenue that ran out of funding, closed, and was sold at least ten years ago. If community leaders had more foresight they would saved that property as Independence looked to be growing. Couple with the closing of Pleasure Isle and more recently Coney Island, and there are very few opportunities now for young people to learn how to swim. We are exceptionally blessed having access to TSMC and our own smaller HOA pool given these unfortunate developments.
