Cub Scout Awards

A night of catching up on Cub Scout Awards. We built some fast cars this year and both boys took home a trophy for the Pinewood Derby. Ben came in first and Teddy second. We also had a lot of catch up to do on announcements also. Can I say how amazing it was to come here and not have to speak! I did end up taking the microphone to get things in order and moving along, but as I am no longer Cubmaster I do not have to put together a program for the pack, just my den, which is a huge relief.

Tee-Ball First Practice

Our second season of tee-ball is starting up and it was great to see the kids out there practicing and playing together. I can’t believe how much they’re growing up already. Ben seems to be really excelling at sports. He just has a natural athleticism to him in the way he runs and throws. There’s also a mental aspect to sports that not enough people talk about and he seems to have that too. I’m not sure that’s something you can instill in a child if they don’t have it, no matter how much you want them to be that way. I think more parents need to hear this message.

In my years of being involved in youth sports, I’ve seen too many parents threaten or try to bribe their kids to play a sport they have no desire to do so. In these instances I suggest exposing your child to other sports or activities. Just because you love baseball doesn’t mean your kid may not end up loving soccer, or lacrosse, or hockey if given the choice. If they don’t like any of those then maybe chess, or archery, or academic team could be options. The most important aspect is to get them to see what it takes to be good at something, to not coast, to make mistakes and be able to bounce back from them, to build up their values and their character. Even music can teach them these things, can you imagine getting up in front of a hundred people and playing your solo flawlessly in front of them?

Birria Burritos

We don’t get much in the way of variety or novel eating establishments out where I live so you take what you can get. Our local Mexican restaurant used to be a public library, and it still looks like one inside. I started off my meal with a lime margarita on the rocks. I rarely drink when we go out but given it was happy hour (we eat early) I ordered one up. Of course we ordered guacamole, which is good here. For the meal I ordered the Birria Burrito, which is a new addition on the menu. The burrito itself was tasty and I enjoyed the meal, however the food here is definitely toned down. My sons challenged themselves and ordered something that was neither a cheeseburger or chicken tenders. They enjoyed their traditional tacos although it took some encouragement to eat all of that cilantro and onions.

Finally, a picture of a helicopter landing on a lawn next to my son’s school. I’ve never seen one this close before. They were practicing to get the kids hyped up for testing.
