Thoughts on Managing a Crisis
“Never let a good crisis go to waste” – Nicolo Machiavelli.
A crisis is usually defined as a situation that is dangerous or unstable. In a crisis there is often not a clear path to resolution, and likewise, there is not enough time to decide on how to deal with it. A crisis can occur because of our actions, but sometimes it may occur despite our actions. Sometimes we have control over it, most times we do not. Nonetheless we need to react to it, create a path forward, and execute upon our plan. Most of the time we respond to a crisis hoping to get back to some past state, and sometimes we make comprises when that is not possible.
A crisis can also be an opening to great opportunity. A crisis usually requires quick thinking and quick action, and what may have not been doable before maybe doable now. A crisis may be an opportunity to change one’s approach to life in general, whether it is their health or career path. A crisis is a time when you can throw off your old preconceived notions about yourself or others and adopt something new. You can ask yourself, was my past state serving me? Or was I serving it? What is important to realize when dealing with a crisis is that no matter how scary it is, there will be an end to it. How you react to that situation, how you bounce back from it, will be up to you. It’s important to remember, you have control over how you react.
The next time you face a crisis, consider if there is a way to further your own goals. It may give you the confidence and hope to get through it.
