Adventure Science Center – Nashville, TN

I am a fan of museums, as presented in this blog. We’ve been to quite a few of them so far, although not nearly enough. While we were visiting Nashville for a TaeKwonDo tournament, we decided to make a day trip to the Adventure Science Center while there and add another one to our list. It did not disappoint.

We arrived at the museum near its opening time on a weekday – typically the best if you are planning a visit one. Although the mornings can be busy with your typical attendees – stay at home moms with strollers and school groups, you will find that after they clear out you’ll have the entire place to yourself. This typically happens around lunchtime, with 2:00 to closing being wide open.

The Adventure Science Museum contains a great selection of varied exhibits that kept my two sons engaged the entire day. There’s so much for them to interact with and lots of hands on exhibits that actually work. Visit any museum where most of the stuff is broken or missing and you know what I mean. There are several key areas, one devoted to the body, one to science and physics, one to space, all centered around a huge tower children can play in. At the top there is a nest of sorts, where kids can climb up and look through the glass pyramid roof onto Nashville. My oldest son found this to be the most intriguing of all. We in fact had trouble getting him out of it, and just surrendered and let him play until he had enough at the end of the day.

So, the Adventure Science Center isn’t the largest of its type that we’ve visited. We really dove through it though, especially after lunch when it seemed it completely cleared out. I think we did everything two or three times. I think if we are in that area in the future, we’ll more than likely visit again.

Some things I found interesting – I liked the hands on science lab that kids go into and just start playing around on. There was a 3D printer at work, LEGOs they could build, and other science games they could enjoy. I also liked that they had things there that kids of all ages could enjoy, so both of my sons were totally engaged the entire time. I also liked the live science demonstrations that occurred throughout the day. This really freshened things up, I think if you came here regularly this would add some novelty to your visit. My sons are too young to pay much attention to them though, unfortunately. One in particular involving dry ice reminded me of a science prank we played in high school with our Chemistry teacher on the class. We unfortunately got in trouble for that one and I will not elaborate.
