Meals
Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Three of my favorite words. Adopting a unified approach to eating is something not to be taken lightly. I have experimented much with different eating patterns in my life. Atkins and Keto work to lose weight, but the fat content is hard on your gall-bladder if you have a familial history of it, and a lack of fiber will give you cramping and constipation. Veganism is wonderful, I tried that once to get my cholesterol levels down, but finding protein is difficult, and eventually you get tired of chopping food and eating all of the time. If you love the practice of eating, veganism is for you. The one my doctor recommends to me all of the time though is the Mediterranean diet, which is essentially lean meats, veggies, olive oil, and not much sugar.
I find the best way to eat is to reduce your options to those that you enjoy, give you adequate nutrition, and reduce decision fatigue. Here is my normal regiment.
Breakfast – two eggs over medium with butter on sourdough toast or a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. You get a good mix of carbohydrate, fat, and protein. I skip breakfast cereal and instant oatmeal, pancakes and waffles, biscuits and gravy and the traditional morning breakfast foods. I will occasionally have a slice of bacon or some avocado to mix things up.
Lunch – eat a salad. I like a lettuce base with chopped lunch meat, shredded cheese, and croutons. Throw in other cut vegetables you have on hand. Of course, a salad is a healthy choice, but it also decreases decision fatigue during the day, which is a boon during a busy workday. I think the fiber in this meal helps even me out also for the rest of the day. I notice when I eat a salad for lunch I also feel less bloated.
Dinner – keep it to one plate. Fill that plate up as much as you dare. Whatever you do, no seconds. It is hard getting used to this, but this will go far in keeping our blood sugar steady as you head to bed. I usually do a protein, a good helping of steamed or roasted veggies, and whatever carbohydrate we are eating. I try to skip out on the wheat based pastas, those just make me feel gassy and I am not sure they are good for your blood sugar.
And that is the end of my series on my ten step plan for optimal health. Thank you for reading this nonsense.
