The Purpose Driven Life – Day 4
“You have an inborn instinct that longs for immortality. This is because God designed you, in his image, to life for eternity.” It seems like part of the human condition to pretend that death is not inevitable. We all assume we will live to be 100 years old, some even hold out hope for some miracle cure that will cheat death completely. Perhaps it is optimism, perhaps it is just denial, perhaps it is not owning up to something we realize is slightly terrifying. What will death be like? Will it be painful? Will it be easy? Will we realize it is happening? Most of us hope we can die peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. If we all crave eternity, is that hunger from God? Is that a symptom of being made in his image? I believe spending eternity in hell is terrifying. I want to know how one truly gets there. If deep down in their heart did they deny Jesus? Do they deny God? If we are judged by our sins, none of us will reach heaven, because we are all sinners.
“When you live in light of eternity, your values change. You use your time and money more wisely. You place a higher premium on relationship and character instead of fame or wealth or achievements or even fun.” If we do place a premium on character and relationships we are bound to be happier in life. Character is a culmination of our values, and if those are aligned we can live life with less regret, less anger, less second guessing ourselves or others. Relationships are the most valuable, and realizing the end is inevitable may help some people heal those relationships and come back together.
