Back To School For The Boys, and Me!

My two week summer break is over and my next class is starting up. This next particular class will be on IS strategy and organizations. I suspect I have a leg up given what I do but I’ve found that it’s not good to assume anything about what we’ll cover in an MBA course. I will admit it all has me hankering to launch my business, Stablewatch Solutions, and start doing something with it. I am working on and refining the business plan for it and I think I have something workable, although I suspect that if I go through with it that it will most likely be part time work and something I cannot partake with my current employer given the nature of the business. I could instead do something alternative, like IT infrastructure, dashboard development, or maybe just do skunk work research type work with it based on data integrations and business dashboarding.

The boys are back in school and summer is sadly over for us. I will miss seeing them everyday for lunch and hearing them in the house. Of course this also means my mornings get a little more hectic again as I drop the youngest off at his school. The oldest starts middle school and that is fun to see him grow up and experience the transition out of elementary. I went to Catholic schools where the transfer wasn’t that much pronounced, and high school just felt like grade school with more substance abuse. Ted is concentrating on Scouts, and will be playing the saxophone, while swimming, tennis, and archery. He is supposedly to start training with the high school swim team. I think it’s important to have at least one sport, whatever it is, to just learn that mental toughness equation that comes from it.

More Work On The Bin

We are wrapping up construction on our storage bin. I built two lofts in it to store long term items. Honestly, it was a ton of work and I was exhausted after it. I really thought it would be easy and I’d accomplish much more, but the heat just really got to me. I spent the day afterwards, most of Sunday, recuperating from the strain. What is interesting though is how relaxed I felt building it. It was a great mental break from what I was doing and it was fun. I get why people build things as a stress relief. It kind of takes you out of it and lets you focus on something and work with your body. The next steps will be building out the shelving units so we can finally move the rest of the stuff out of the garage, then stuff in the basement to the garage, and then start working on finishing the basement.

Other Updates

My hair is now the longest it’s ever been in my life. I was never allowed to grow my hair long in school because of dress code requirements but I’ve decided to give it a go. Originally I just wanted to grow it a little longer, I noticed my scalp got sunburned last year and I was hoping for a little more coverage. I’m not sure how long I’ll go with it but it’s interesting to see what it looks like. For one, it is very curly, which I did not expect. The care for it is kind of a pain, as is getting knots, and driving in the car with the window down sucks. I’ve taken to pulling it back but I don’t quite have a enough to not make it look weird, or like a man bun. I’m not sure how long I’m going to keep it. I suspect if I ever find myself back on the job market I will certainly cut it and shave my beard, so perhaps that is the end.
