Cub Scout Camp At Cub World, Kicking Off A Lot Of Scout Camping

Cub Scout Camp

This is the week I’ve not been looking forward to for awhile. This week, and next, I will be at two summer camps for Scouting. The first three days of the jaunt will have me at Cub World with Ben and the Cub Scouts. This will be two nights of camping. Then I come home, wash clothes, and get to sleep in my own bed. The next morning I wake up early and drive the Boy Scouts to Randsburg Scouting Reservation in Indiana. There I will camp for six additional days. All of this was planned before I started my MBA program, so I need to find a way to get about 25 hours of homework done during this trip. The first week at Cub World is clear. I will get all of my homework and papers written during a marathon session the week before, then have some catch-up the week after. I will most likely come home one day during the Troop camp-out just because it will be too much to do and I will need some focus time.

Cub World was fun. By the way, we were also on the news at camp. A news crew came by and asked if they could do an interview with a scout leader while our scouts played in the background. There were some concerns with the recent flooding in Texas and what looks to be a total lack of preparation there (well meaning amateurs). Although we weren’t far off from the river, Scouting America does a top notch planning process. Luckily for us a large hill was nearby with steps, so if we needed to we could go up them. Of course we were all a little spooked by what happened in Texas, that was absolutely terrible and heart wrenching. The news feature where our Scouts were in it is HERE.

So, more on camp. First off it was wonderful being here and not being a leader. I could actually spend time with my own son instead of running around trying to marshal Scouts. Of course, I stepped in and led, that is just what I do, but only when absolutely necessary and just to help the Scouts out. Ben seemed to appreciate just spending time with me also and I liked being with just him. The camp was fun, we got to swim together, Ben did archery and fishing and BB guns (which are his favorites). They added slingshots which was nice. I didn’t have much trouble finding a restroom this year but I did have trouble getting sleep. The heat was just unbearable. Everyday was 90+ and it didn’t cool off until around midnight. Of course, when you get up at 6:00 AM it kind of wears you down. I think that is what I dislike most about Cub World is just camping during summer. I did meet some nice people who recommended a batter pack/fan combination that I will bring next year when we come back. Not having a fan and camping where we did, which was a series of low slung trees, was too much.
