Cast Iron Seasoning

I’ve had this cast iron pot forever and I’ve never really used it. It’s mostly sat in the garage getting pretty gross. I wanted to clean it up and re-season it best I could. I watched a few YouTube videos and everyone recommended this Crisbee Creme and it works great. It is one part beeswax one part sesame oil so it actually burns off smokeless. I did two passes on it and this pot looks great, better than brand new. I started by scrubbing it down with a brillo pad and dish soap and then applied the creme on it, put it into the oven for 30 minutes at 400 degrees then let it cool. Hopefully I can get this thing working and make some campfire food. I bought this after a fishing trip where someone made a “dump cake” that used Sprite as the liquid. Let me tell you it was amazing. I’ve been trying to recreate that experience ever since!

Cub Scout Camp and Glow Party

I hosted my first ever Cub Scout camp and it was a blast. I had forty people there and yes, I was a little nervous going into it. The storm clouds didn’t bode well either, but we got it to work. Everyone pitched in, I actually did very little than just walking around (which wore me out). One of the dads helped the boys build drums out of a sonos concrete tube and masking tape. This was a hit! My brother came up with the idea for the cheap drums, we’ll probably do that again next year for the next group of Bears.

Everyone went off pretty well. The scouts enjoyed playing in the creek and finding all kinds of critters. I was a little upset that our campsite was so far away from the road but the location ended up being great. We also worked out the food line and got the blacktop working after I reasoned it. Another leader there worked out the food and got the hamburgers made. I brought two trays of smoked pork shoulder and people destroyed it. They piled it on top of there burgers and everyone had more than enough to eat. I was glad everything went well. The Cubmaster just makes sure things go well and that was my only goal. I will say our last Cubmaster was good at getting camp going so I wanted to make sure I was good at it too.

Finally, we ended the night with a “glow party”. It’s so important to get your campfire right. This is what they remember, the s’mores, the stores, the singing, the jokes. I brought a ton of glow stuff and some of the parents helped break necklaces. All of them ran around at night with glowing eye glasses it was a lot of fun. They all agreed it was fun and we’ll do that again.

Spring Soccer

Spring soccer for T is finishing up. Our time with ISC is dwindling down too and T has to decide if he wants to step up his game and tryout for select soccer in the next year or two. We’ve talked about conditioning and what we can do to play at a higher level and he seems interested in it. This summer we’ll have to spend some time running and getting into shape. He’s still not a huge fan of taking contact but if we can get his legs better he might find that he’s so athletic he can affect the game a little more in the future.
