Dutchman’s Trap Shooting Practice And Pork Butts Smoking

Dutchman’s Trap Shooting Practice And Pork Butts Smoking

I am so glad to be a member of Dutchman’s. These guys are fun to hang out with and they are just really good people. It’s like having a huge extended family. My wife has a huge, close family and they are really good to me but I come from a family that’s just not very close. In fact, as time has gone on I’ve started liking them more and more. Her sisters in particular are all funny and I consider them my sisters more and more I get to be around them. Her family is really cool to be honest. They all care about you and ask how you are doing and they remember what you tell them. Even her distant relatives are warm when they see you and really fun to be around. I have relatives who don’t even know what I do for a living, or really care for that matter. Sometimes you have to just build your own tribe when one is not available to you.

I also got a chance to fish and I broke out the 8 weight fly rod I won at NKFF’s banquet. The ponds are absolutely stuffed with large-mouth bass. I am starting to get back into the outdoor pursuits. I’ve been focusing more on marksmanship and archery than hunting though. I have a Browning BTS for trap that I am learning how to shoot. I also have on order a Bowtech Revolution that is the pinnacle of modern archery. I hope to go to the club one day, shoot some clay targets, practice archery, and fish. I kind of like the process of shooting and having something to compete in. Trap honestly is on its way out as people gravitate away from shooting as a sport/hobby. Most people seem to be into “modern sporting rifles” and they just go to the range to blow out as many rounds as possible. Unfortunately shooting is so expensive now that cost is a prohibition. You cannot even load your own shells, that is expensive too.

Meat smoking is going OK. I am dialing in the pork butt. I go with a 12 hour smoke at 250. I can’t seem to get the meat up to 200 degrees but I do get it pretty tender though. I tried a tenderloin too but that was kind of dry. I am also going to try chicken wings by getting the smoker up to 350 and doing two levels of trays. When I get this right it’s going to be lights out. The Weber Smokey Mountain has been fun to learn, and so is charcoal honestly. It’s not even as much work as I suspected, although as far as grilling goes I much prefer the simplicity of propane and cast iron grilling grates.
