Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!

Our Independence Day celebration can probably be described as muted at best. Given social distancing and the multitude of cancelled events, we chose to stay home and enjoy the fireworks from our backyard. Evidently our entire neighborhood struck upon the same idea and we found ourselves completely surrounded by various air and ground displays on all four sides of the house. The fireworks peaked around 10:00 pm with a new crackle or pop every few seconds. Our sons ventured inside at this point because of the intensity, but when you live in a town called Independence it is to be expected.

I can note that I enjoyed the privilege of two weekdays off last week to combine into a much needed long weekend. Behind on several projects, I spent time assembling a picnic table and trampoline while finding time to power wash the siding on the house. Our club’s pool also adopted fairly reasonable social distancing measures, so we reserved a slot in the evenings and made for the water. My sons really needed to get out of the house and burn off some energy. They did not want to leave either night, but we talked them into leaving by offering ice cream.

Hopefully next year we find ourselves enjoying company with family and friends. I hate that my son’s summer is turning out this way as you only get so many as a youth, but we are making due and finding joy where we can.
