TaeKwonDo Tournament – Cincinnati, OH

The TaeKwonDo tournament schedule continues, this time much closer in Cincinnati, OH. Both my wife and son competed as I watched. It was a long day sitting on a gym floor, but I will continue being supportive in their endeavors. It’s been very positive for both of them.

TaeKwoDo is an interesting hobby I think. It gives someone something to strive towards. Black belts are roughly a three year process, and you can go further than that if you want. It is martial arts and self defense, but I’d say it’s really more of sport. If you want to be good at it, work on your cardio. A lot of the people I see get really winded. My wife has excellent cardio so she has no problem with them. My cardio isn’t too bad, I would suck at it though. I just at the end of the day prefer lifting weights for fitness, although because we are on a family pass I could take TaeKwonDo for free. Perhaps I will one day, I am not sure. I’m thinking our youngest son is going to do it.

I want to address the idea of TaeKwonDo as a method of self defense. People will argue back and forth, but the truth is if you can throw kicks and punches and block you’re going to have a good chance of defending yourself anyway. There is nothing that can take the place of a firearm though, that is the ultimate self defense. I argue that all women should carry a handgun. As far as hand to hand combat, I’ve seen enough violence to know that in a fight the best bet is to extricate from the situation as fast as possible. That’s why I think Krav Maga is the better, as you are trained to deal a crippling blow of some sort and then flee. After a fight at a local bar, a friend’s brother was murdered by someone who flew out of nowhere and cold cocked him. He hit his head and died. The thing was – he was just outside watching the fight. That’s why my advice on these things is to get out of the way , do not partake. If you have nothing to gain, and most people do not, then why participate in it.

I’m not sure where this TaeKwonDo thing is going to go for our family. It may become a central tenet of it. I think in general you should note what items you do the most and fold them into your identity and celebrate them. It doesn’t make sense to just dabble in things after a certain point, I think you commit to and go forward with it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always incredibly important to increase your range and sample things life offers, but why can’t we be a “TaeKwonDo family?” What is stopping us really?
