Kings Island – 50th Birthday

Kings Island – 50th Birthday

We visited Kings Island on Friday evening to celebrate its 50th Birthday Party. I am glad that we did because Kings Island holds a special place in my past and I wanted to be there for this event. I have a lot of happy memories of going to Kings Island as a kid with my family and riding roller coasters with my brother. Growing up we typically didn’t go on vacations, but my mom always purchased a season pass when we were teens so that we could go up and have some fun during the summer. She would follow us around in the heat, in the summer, with her feet hurting while we had fun riding some really great rides. Of course, we weren’t always well behaved. We caused some mischief there as well but overall we had some great fun.

My favorite ride as a kid was Viking Fury and my favorite roller coaster was the Vortex. I am curious how many people remember the ship on Viking fury tipping and riders yelling at each other at the top of each swing and saying “tastes great, less filling”, which was a popular beer commercial at the time. I was afraid of roller coasters for a long time, until a beloved aunt took me on one and I had so much fun that I was hooked forever. As you can imagine I was super bummed when they dismantled Vortex. My favorite steel coaster now is up in the air, but my favorite wooden is the Beast (at night).

I am glad that my little guys are making good memories at Kings Island themselves. My oldest son is riding coasters now and is looking forward to getting taller. My youngest son is a little hesitant, but he’s slowly starting to ride more rides in Snoopy Junction. Our family favorite ride right now is probably Boo Blasters where everyone competes for the highest score. It is a must visit every time we are there.

My enjoyment of the park has changed over the years. I don’t ride as many rides as I used to these days. For one I let my oldest son and wife go ride coasters while I take my youngest son around and let him ride. I actually enjoy eating the food, having a few beers, and watching my boys have fun instead. I also play games and love the arcade also. I have quite a few points on my card to turn in one day.

So, happy birthday Kings Island. The park looks terrific and is obviously being managed quite well. The Eiffel Tower looks great with its new paint job and lighting effects. The landscaping looks great too and it was hard to find a place that’s not been revamped recently. I’ve not seen the arcades since the makeover, and I am looking forward to it. Also, the food keeps getting better and better. Great experience and so glad this is near our house.
