Cubmaster Induction

With the official Blue and Gold dinner, aka the Crossing Over Ceremony, I am now the official Cubmaster of Pack 808. The current Cubmaster will pass over with his child to the Boy Scouts. I volunteered to help out here because T has two years left, and then B will be a Lion next year and will start his journey so I’ll be around awhile. One of my good friends will also help out, and there’s plenty of support going forward. I’ve also divested of most other volunteer types of things, so I can devote that time to it. I have learned so far that 1 hour a month was a fib. This is more like twenty or so a month if you want to do it right.

I am approaching this new role as an act of ministry. I don’t really have anything that is really a community/personal outreach that I do. I think you get the most bang for the buck as far as time goes with the Cub Scouts. It is a character enriching program based on a core value set I believe in. I’ve already grown so much working with these boys and my son has really benefited from having a secondary group of friends outside of his school that he can relate. I’ve also made other parent friends too and our little scout family has really come together. I’ll also be the Bears den leader, and look forward to working with these boys. Right now we have twelve and they are really excited about becoming Webelos next year.

Also special shout-out to our friends at Gold Star Chili donating food to our banquet again this year, you guys rock!

Spring Soccer

T started spring soccer this year. His new coach knows what he is doing so I am glad for them. I’ve started waiting in the car while he practices now and watching him from there. I notice when he practices he’s constantly looking at me to see my reaction and I don’t think he’s getting enough space to explore soccer and his skills more. I notice when I’m not on the field he plays more aggressive and experiments more. Perhaps he’s so worried about doing it right when I’m there it doesn’t let him open up and try something new. I certainly did not like practicing in front of others when I was a kid because I was just opening myself up to criticism later. I try to be really careful about that too, and just ask if he’s having fun. The only thing we’ve talked about was his conditioning. We really need to get his cardio and strength better if he wants to play this game at a higher level. He does agree and wants to get stronger, we just need to find a way to get him in shape. The weeks are just so jam packed it’s hard to fit anything else in.

We’ve also talked a lot about showing respect to people by looking at them when they’re talking to you and I think that’s been good with him and his coach. I know coaching is hard enough and it sucks when you think the kids don’t care.
