Cub Scout Hike, Quitting Twitter For Good

Cub Scout Hike, Quitting Twitter For Good

I took my Cub Scouts hiking as part of their last required belt loop. It was a good time and they enjoyed it. We had some really hilly terrain to deal with but it was a beautiful, albeit chilly, sunny day. They are so funny and had me cracking up the entire time. This has been a great year I am so glad I got to spend it with them.

Yes, I did it. I quit Twitter for good! Buh bye. I’ll admit it, I loved Twitter. I met some really nice and knowledgeable people but I’m done with it. First off, it is a time suck. I don’t want anything I am checking all the time. All of those little peaks add up over time and break my flow. Twitter just has that weird feature that makes you believe a few minutes here and there doesn’t hurt but I’m not sure that’s healthy for us. But how do they get you to do that? One you’re curious what is in the news, lastly there’s a bit of outrage bating on there. I don’t need a service that makes me angry or makes me think people I agree with are “scoring points”. Keep the dopamine trickle. I am also not interested in outrage culture, and I am certainly not interested in Culture War 2.0 that is taking shape. The left and right barking at each other without ever saying anything of substance is just old and played out. Finally, I quit it because I can’t tell what is real anymore. Going forward I will be paying for my news with a subscription to my local online paper the Cincinnati Enquirer and that’s just about it. I don’t need that nonsense anymore. There is also way, way better technological information and insights on the Y Combinator/Hacker News message board.

If you ask me if I think Elon is ruining Twitter – I think the answer is yes. He got stuck with a loser there, overpaying for Twitter and now needs to trim up and it’s going to hurt that business. $44 billion for a company that historically loses money on a $5 billion top line isn’t a choice I’d recommend. The only way he can make that up is to increase engagement, and the only way for that is fan the culture war flames. It’s going to be a $hit show over there for some time. I also think he didn’t do himself a favor either, that blunder is costing him elsewhere in terms of Tesla shareholder lawsuits and a diminished public perception which he needs for future financing deals. This is a lose/lose for him in my opinion.
