Deer Season Kick Off 2022

Deer Season Kick Off 2022

I am back in the deer woods for the first time in several years. I am hunting a new piece of land located at my gun club. This is the first time I’ve hunted out there and it’s been challenging thus far. It’s not the most prime piece on the property. You’d think looking at it on a map it would be, but given it’s hemmed in and surrounded by other hunters and it would take a miracle for a deer to survive getting to me, or at least a lot of bad shots. Opening weekend was really busy, but I do think if I hunt out here on other weekends, and probably more into bow season, I could improve my odds.

In all honesty, I’m not sure I want to see anything. I just like to be outside where I can read my Kindle and watch nature. Harvesting a deer’s become hard work anymore. Given I no longer own a truck and don’t want to drench the interior of my Ford Bronco with blood, I’ll need to both field dress and butcher the deer myself on site. Not that I have an alternative even if I used a trailer or something – my preferred processor ceased deer trimming operations as they cannot find help to do it anymore. I’ll have to process it on my own anyway.

So far this season I’d say some days were beautiful, some not so much. For the most part the days were very cold with snow and wind. Temperatures dipped below freezing most mornings despite being in the 70’s the week before. I purchased a Buddy Heater and that helped tremendously. Others in the field gave up pretty quickly and were out before lunchtime on opening day. My blind was passed multiple times by people going back up to the club house to get breakfast. I am really thinking I come to Deer Camp again in 2023 and hang out with the guys. I did have a lot of fun with them and we ate some great food. I don’t keep a camper on premises, and it was way too cold to sleep in the trap house again, so I came home both nights.

If I were to do this right I’ll most likely need to sight my rifle out further, or maybe even step up to a 300 Weatherby. The deer came up on the ridge from where I hunted but my 30-06 would be pushing it on distance. There is a rifle range I could sight it in better, I will try that this summer. I’ll admit, a 300 Weatherby does sound cool maybe I’ll get one anyway LOL. I do kind of prefer accuracy in shooting sports whether it be long distance or short. It looks like I have some work to do on my shooting game this off-season regardless.
